Toddler Bath Time

Another way to make baths mean more is to use it as a time for your little one to learn and discover the world around her as she grows. With lots of props like pictures, cups and books, toddler bath time is a perfect time to enhance your child’s learning and nurture her bond with you.

Your toddler develops her sense of self-confidence when she takes care of her toys all by herself and figures out how to pop those soap bubbles. Her thinking skills are boosted as she uses her imagination while playing pretend, and when she makes connections between what she sees in books and in her own “real” life. Language skills and muscular strength are being developed naturally as she turns the pages of her book and learns new words as you read together.

What you can do

Engage your little one by asking her if she’d want to wash her hands and feet by herself during toddler bath time.

Appreciate your toddler’s discoveries and accomplishments. Let her know what a good job she does, for example, cleaning and taking care of her ducky.

Help her cope with transitions by giving her notice before bath time ends and letting her take a favourite toy with her.

What your child is learning

That she can take care of herself and that she is a good helper.

That she is important and capable.

That her feelings are important and that you will help her manage difficult situations.

Language and Thinking Skills

What you can do

Make toddler bath time special for your baby by exploring together along with books. Invite her to point to familiar objects. Show her the connection between what she sees in the book and things in her “real” world.

Talk to your toddler about what you are doing together during bath time. Ask her questions: Does your toy need a wash too?

Help your toddler become a good problem-solver by engaging her in various activities. For example, blow bubbles and help her pick up the technique, or tell her stories and ask her to continue them.

What your child is learning

New words and the art of loving books and reading. Toddler bath time can be an ideal time to cultivate the habit of reading in her from a very young age!

That she is a good communicator. That she can develop her own ideas.

That she can tackle the challenges she faces.

Physical Development

What you can do

Enhance toddler bath time by giving your child different and safe objects to explore while in the tub.

Notice the way she uses her body to make things happen, like popping soap bubbles.

What your child is learning

How to use her fingers and hands to make things work, such as grasping the pitcher firmly and dunking it in the water before pouring.

That she has a good, strong body that can do so many great things. This builds positive self-esteem.

Remember: Part of keeping toddler bath time fun is making sure your baby is safe. NEVER leave a baby alone in the bath. Not even for a second. So gather all the things you will need for a bath beforehand and let the phone ring over to voicemail. Also, be sure to set your water heater below 48 degrees Celsius to help prevent the possibility of scalding.
